As the bus slowed to a stop, the peals of laughter inside died down; wide eyes peered out the windows in amazement. Jeff Dart, student ministries pastor at Omaha’s suburban Brookside Church (EFCA), glanced at his wife, Christina.
Is this really a good idea? he wondered. Are we ready for this?
Outside the bus was North Omaha—a place synonymous with poverty and crime. Two to three hundred homeless people populated the few blocks surrounding the Sienna Francis House shelter. The stale smell of need clung to the muggy summer breeze. For many, this part of town was decidedly the wrong side of the tracks.
